It feels like home – with home-like amenities that provide a warm atmosphere. Artwork adorns the walls, paintings are all around – people enjoying each other’s company. It is peaceful, it is welcoming. That is what strikes you when you enter the Lilacs, which hosts ‘The Club.’
The Club is a program specifically geared to the slower pace of our aging core members and those who need a more recreational approach to daily life. This brings together a group of people who enjoy baking, artwork, bowling and watching television with a chance for a nap during the day. Our senior core members connect with other seniors’ programs in the wider community of Richmond Hill, so as to develop other friendships and interests outside of L’Arche Daybreak.
The Club is calm, yet crowded.
A renovation to the Lilacs will dramatically improve the setting for The Club. The living room will be expanded to better accommodate walkers and wheelchairs. The expansion will also provide more natural light with all its proven health benefits.

Members of the Club participate in a number of activities.

During my Monday afternoon visits we often go through some of The Club’s many photo albums or someone’s life story book. Many of the memories we share reach back decades; sometimes they are funny and sometimes they are sad. It is wonderful to learn and share with people who live such rich and diverse lives.

Life Story

Francis Maurice – an elder in our community who came to L’Arche Daybreak in 1972 – is a man whose presence garners respect as he shares a pearl of wisdom or asks a pertinent question. Over the years, Francis has shared his talents with us through art, music and a great sense of humour. Francis always seems to be in a hurry, and even though today he is in his 80s and requires the aid of a walker, this has not slowed him down. Indeed Francis loves to bowl with The Club each week and might be the first up on the dance floor at a community celebration, or perhaps breeze by you in the corridor as he makes his way somewhere with purpose.
