Volunteer Opportunities

Many individuals volunteer at L’Arche Daybreak in various roles, and often they develop long-term friendships with an individual member or with one of the homes or programs. As a volunteer, you may find yourself helping occasionally in the office or with fundraising projects. Other times, it may be helping to maintain the garden, catching up on some sewing, or cooking dinner with a core member – many jobs become available, and you are sure to be suited to one or several.

People sometimes come to L’Arche because they are interested in the field of intellectual disability. They are drawn by L’Arche’s vision, which focuses on the gifts of people with developmental disabilities, their contributions to society and mutual relationships. In order to live this out, we ask that you consider committing to a year of volunteering, to give time to get to know people and to form these nourishing relationships.

Volunteers come to Daybreak wanting an experience of life in community. The prospect of being with people of differing intellectual capacity, social origin, religion and culture is attractive. L’Arche Daybreak helps to create settings where relationships of mutuality can develop. Some come with a social justice interest or because the spiritual dimension of L’Arche attracts them.

Whatever one’s initial motivation, volunteers soon realize that the people they come to be with and with whom they develop friendships have much to give and to teach them about life.
