The Spirit Movers

The Spirit Movers gather as a team to develop, rehearse, and expand their dance repertoire. The troupe performs regularly throughout the year. The Spirit Movers also facilitate student retreats focused on movement and music.

The Spirit Movers meet once a week as a group to rehearse and plan for upcoming events. The dance troupe is for those who are committed as performing dancers. This is the time to plan, choreograph, and rehearse our retreats and performances. This opportunity requires regular attendance. Dancers coming for the weekly meeting should also be prepared to be available for occasional retreats and performances at various other times and locations.

We also have a new group playfully called The Movers and Shakers that meets on Mondays (9:00am-4:00pm) with a focus on creative movement and storytelling.

The Spirit Movers have danced at many events and churches since its formation in 1993.

Although most performances take place in more traditional places of worship, the Spirit Movers have also performed at the Air Canada Centre, the Winter Garden Theatre, and the Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. In the summer of 2002, the Spirit Movers had the privilege of dancing at the welcoming ceremony for Pope John Paul II during World Youth Day in Toronto.

When Henri Nouwen lived in L’Arche Daybreak , he was a visionary and a great supporter of The Spirit Movers. As a celebration in memory of our friendship with him, we danced at the Henri Nouwen Conference in May 2006 commemorating the 10th anniversary of his death. The Spirit Movers most recent, large-scale performance was at the Richmond Hill Centre for Performing Arts in Daybreak’s 50th Anniversary Gala: Celebrate The Gift.
